Assignment Objectives:
Upon the successful completion of this assignment, students will be able to develop a
better understanding of sub-specializations of neuroscience which contribute to the
understanding of brain and behavior relationship.
Dear Students,
Given below are the scenarios related to sub-specializations of neuroscience which have been
discussed in Lesson 03 of your course. Your task is to read the scenarios carefully and identify which
sub-field of neuroscience has been discussed. Moreover; you are also required to provide explanation.
In this regard; you can use the table provided below:

1. A study of the role of the hippocampus
in learning and memory. The research
project involves surgical removal of
the hippocampus from the rat brain
followed by an assessment of memory
tasks by that same rat.
2. A Study of effects of barbiturates on
social behavior. The project involves
injecting various amounts of drugs into
lab rats and studying the effects of
their behavior.
3. Study of an elaborate process of
language acquisition. A group of
chimpanzees will be observed over a
period of time to see how they
communicate with each other and
maintain and social hierarchy in their
group.
4. Effects of injury to Broca’s area on
human speech. A number of patients
with stroke with evidence of damage
to Broca’s area as seen on the MRI
scan of these patients will be tested on
their conversational skills.
Marking Scheme:
Each case carries 05 Marks (2 marks= identification of the method, 3 marks=
explanation)
